The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main St. (1972)

"Exile On Main St." is the tenth British and 12th American studio album by English rock band The Rolling Stones. Released as a double LP in May 1972. A sprawling, weary double album encompassing rock & roll, blues, soul, and country, "Exile On Main St." doesn't try anything new on the surface, but the substance is new. This album is a weary record, and not just lyrically. Jagger's vocals are buried in the mix, and the music is a series of dark, dense jams, with Keith Richards and Mick Taylor spinning off incredible riffs and solos. And the songs continue the breakthroughs of their three previous albums. No longer does their country sound forced or kitschy  it's lived-in and complex, just like the group's forays into soul and gospel. While the songs, including the masterpieces "Rocks Off," "Tumbling Dice," "Torn and Frayed," "Happy," "Let It Loose," and "Shine a Light," are all terrific, they blend together, with only certain lyrics and guitar lines emerging from the murk. It's the kind of record that's gripping on the very first listen, but each subsequent listen reveals something new.  The release of "Exile on Main St." met with mixed reviews, but it is now generally regarded as the band's best album. In 2003, the album was ranked 7th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Johnny Cash & June Carter - Give My Love to Rose (1972)

If you´ve seen Johnny Cash perform, you know how it makes you smile when Johnny introduces his wife June Carter. At that point in the show you know they´re going to sing "Jackson" or "It Ain´t Me, babe", and when they put their voices together, in front of an audience of thousands, or millions, you know that they sound exactly like they must, sitting around at home, singing for the love of it. (15) Elton John - Honky Château (1972)

"Honky Château" is the fifth studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 1972. In 2003, the album was ranked number 357 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time

This is the first album since John's debut "Empty Sky" not to feature strings on any songs, except for violinist Jean-Luc Ponty on "Mellow" and "Amy". It also marks the beginning of his transition from a singer/songwriter in the mould of James Taylor, Leon Russell or Carole King to a more rock 'n' roll style that would become more evident on such albums as "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Caribou" and "Rock of the Westies".

The opening track "Honky Cat" is a New Orleans funk track reminiscent of Dr. John and Allen Toussaint and features a four-piece horn section arranged by producer Gus Dudgeon. Also of note is the debut on record of the backing vocal combination of Johnstone, Murray and Olsson, who first added what would soon become their "trademark" sound to "Rocket Man". The trio's unique approach to arranging their backing vocal tracks would be a fixture on John's singles and albums for the next several years.

(04) Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles - Live! (1972)

Recorded Live! at the site of a volcanic crater, from December 1971 to April 1972, Carlos Santana and several other members of Santana toured with drummer/vocalist Buddy Miles, a former member of the Electric Flag, and Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys.

This sunny, outdoors 1972 concert in Hawaii finds the guitarist doing some of his funkiest playing, with added six-string help from Neal Schon. Miles offers plenty of his signature soul-drenched vocals, and Robert Hogins' Hammond organ combines with the rhythm section to produce Latin grooves almost mighty enough to trigger an eruption.

There's the early-'70s-style instrumental modal rock of "Marbles," with Carlos lightly shifting his wah pedal to lend a phased voice to his searing solo. The already classic " Evil Ways" is played up-tempo, with a horn section gusting in on the tune's syncopated organ hits and raucous, jazzy solos by sax player Hadley Caliman and trumpeter Luis Gasca. "Them Changes" is also a bit faster and funkier than its original recording, done by Jimi Hendrix and his Band of Gypsys at the Fillmore.
